So, we buried Buddy Smith today. I am in awe, more than ever, of the man that he was. The ripple effect of his love for The Lord, and in turn his desire to serve Him is imeasurable. I was listed, in His obituary, as his son. A great honor. I did not call Buddy Dad, or even father, because I have a father already. Buddy was something different all together. It was just his name to most, but it was his title to me. My dad is Wallace Kelce, and he was my Buddy. I had something that most people will never have, or experience. He acted fatherly toward me when he sternly addressed my error, the night I snuck over to my girlfriends house in high school, thinking I got one over on him. He treated me like a son by helping me with my Elim tuition. But he was never trying to take the place of my real dad. Again, he was something different all together. I slept at the foot of his bed as an infant when my family first moved to virginia. I spent many days with him as a toddler going to watch the fishing boats come in and go out. I traveled on Handi-Ride with him many times as a kid to visit his friend James, also wheelchair bound(I think they brought me along because I was the only one who wasnt legally blind), or to go bowling or get a cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts. He helped me learn spanish(even though he didnt understand one word). He let me see the world through his eyes as we traveled through Europe to preach the good news to any who would listen. Not the eyes of a handicapped man, but of a servant. He never liked to be called handicapped, because in reality, he did more in that chair than most people will ever do with their legs. I loved him more than ever had the chance to tell him. And more than anything I regret not being with him more. I hope I will carry a fraction of the grace and love that he exuded from my time with my Buddy. I will miss him the rest of my life, and look forward to standing face to face with him in eternity. I love you my dearest Buddy!
