So we have a recent situation with our 2.5 year-old girl Yuba that the SPCA has not been able to resolve: Sometimes when Yubas bladder is full she will leak urine and we find a wet spot on her donut bed, or on the sofa if we are having cuddles and watching TV. This started about 2-3 months ago. Also her water consumption seems to have gone up - this could be related to weather and activity. (Shes very active.) We took her to the SPCA for testing. They did a bacterial test (catheter into the bladder) and there is no sign of bacterial infection or UTI. They also checked for foxtails in her privates. We followed this test with a chemical urine sample test, again no sign of any issues related to diabetes, infection, etc. Very healthy dog. The only other explanation they have been able to give is that sometimes the incontinence can be a result of the spay operation. I have been upset by this new piece of information, since there was no disclosure about this before the procedure. As a side note the spay doctor told us that he did a partial hysterectomy, which we were not expecting. (Apparently her uterus was long and he could only remove half without creating a larger incision.) The spay was at age 18 months, shortly before her 2nd heat. SPCA has mentioned medications that can help control the incontinence, but it is a lifetime thing which we would not do. I am upset with the SPCA, for not disclosing anything about the risks and possible side-effects of spaying, and for perhaps botching the procedure. And I am curious to know why this would happen to some female dogs and not others. The problem is only somewhat serious - at least for now. We have dealt with it by being extra-vigilant about potty breaks. Also Yuba starts licking herself when the incontinence beings, so that is a pretty clear signal that she needs to go out. Anyways I know you all have tons of experience so I thought I would share and ask for input.
