So, we have tried but nobody seems to want to listen...and it is SO incredibly sad to say that the Salmon River BOCES Pre-K program, will be closing their classroom tomorrow. 2 amazing BOCES teachers will be separated after working together for 17 years (sent to different schools) and 4 beautiful little 4 year olds will be having to say good bye to these wonderful woman. Parents and families have been told its due to funding but these little ones are the ones who are going to pay the price for poor planning. My nephew is one of the students who will no longer be receiving services at Salmon River. He has found a security in that classroom and has made so much progress, only to have it taken away from him 10 weeks into a school year. (Parents were told that they could send these little ones to Brushton...but It really wasnt taken into consideration the negative effects this move would have on these children.) They are students with special needs and more than most need all the love and kindness they have received in their class at SR. They are students of the Salmon River district but are being told they will have to attend someone elses district. They do not understand what is happening, they will not understand why they are not going to Mackey and Lapages room, they will not understand where their friends are. They are going to be heartbroken, they most likely will regress, they are going to forever be changed, they are going to miss these women who have become more than just teachers to them. If these students did not have special needs, they would be attending a universal Pre-k program in our district- but they do have special needs and so, it boils down to them not having a place in the within the distrct that they live. Shouldnt They have the opportunity to learn and play along with other Salmon River students? (We have asked many questions like this but havent quite gotten an answer) Pam Lapage and Mary Mackey have done an amazing job and we will forever be grateful for the time and love they have given to these little ones. The educational, emotional and personal growth they made in that program is because of them and saying Thank You just doesnt seem to be enough....but at least its a start...So, thank you both so very much!!!!
