So we teach our kids that the planets revolve around the sun. We dont teach them that the entire solar system, sun and all, is moving through space at 70,000km/h. Uhmmm... why not? Its actually *correct*, but were only adding one more piece - the fact that were moving linearly, and not just around the sun. This makes it all the more impressive that we can track objects like asteroids that are heading near earth. It demonstrates that explaining the universe correctly is *not* just basic math. It teaches kids a more accurate picture of how the universe *acutally* works, rather than dumbing it down. We have *got* to do a better job teaching our kids *accurate* information, if we keep subject matter geared to the lowest common denominator, theres no motivation for kids to truly understand how things *really* work. This is not terribly unlike how atoms work, whether theyre in a molecule of gas making up the air around them that they freely walk through or how their school bus works at an atomic scale. What appears solid and dense is, in reality, constantly moving. We can create analogies all day long so every kid can understand this - yet we dont. We feed them antiquated, incorrect, dumbed-down information. How can we possibly move forward as a collective species when only a handful of people understand how things really work, when instead, we could teach *all* kids how things really work and we may well be surprised by what what an otherwise disengaged kid ends up discovering or creating based on *accurate* information.
