So what do you do near midnight when things go bump in the night? - TopicsExpress

So what do you do near midnight when things go bump in the night? One, you better have a plan and if its just Im gonna grab my gun, youre wrong. What gun and what ammo is in it, how am I going to deploy it, where are my loved ones, how am I going to clear or will I hold out? Well Pearl went ape poop down stairs a few mins ago that corresponded with a light flash behind me in my front windows. Bad time to notice my error.....step one if you have an alarm that should be your first line of defense....yeah not armed. My dogs are line two of alerting me and oh boy did Pearl let me know. Im not going to go into my full plan cause yeah that would be dumb to air out over here, but those who Ive helped develop a plan in the past know if obviously have one in my own house. At first I was thinking it was the foxes transiting, but since they normally transit around 1-2 in the morning I figured it was potentially something else and in association with the flash it concerned me a little. Before I get too far and make this super anticlimactic I have no clue what it was. Honestly the flash is kinda disturbing me now that Im thinking about it (but I digress), but I grabbed the XDm45 and my NVG monocle and took a gander outside through my bathroom window. Nothing was in the backyard that I could see and just as I was walking out of the bathroom Pearl lit up again. So I grabbed Gretch and executed the plan, even if I figured whatever she was barking at was outside since there was no other indication of an entry. Hold true to the plan. By the time I got to Pearl she was hair raised, barking and pacing between the kiddy gate in the front hall and the rear door. Standing a few paces back from the door I used my TLR-1 HL light to illuminate my backyard in addition to the porch light that was already on. Seeing nothing Pearl nuzzled up to me as if to say whatever was there is gone. (Never never never take the pursuit outside, even if you saw someone in the shadows. Thats how you get yourself killed). Either way I set the alarm and retreated back to my room. If you use a gun for home defense and dont have an intricate plan of action, youre wrong. Poor planning, not practicing, and adrenaline lead to killing someone you love by accident, yourself, or some poor drunk woman on your door step who thinks shes at her house. Have a plan, taking that shot should be your supremely last option. Ok off my soapbox, back to watching MeatEater (gotta love pausing live TV) on Sportsman Channel. If you made it this far youre probably really bored if you took the time to read my post.
