So when I go quiet its because work has me overwhelmed, which means little time for the creative I yearn for. Luckily for me, as a creative, I can find some level of satisfaction in various endeavors that engage the creative mind and spirit. You might have heard that addicts have a drug of choice, I have my creative endeavor of choice, which most people do. Mine is drawing. Simple tools, portable, engaging, challenging, relaxing and satisfying. I am pretty good, so I like the effort invested in getting it right as well as the zen mindset that accompanies the process. Hours pass easily. When the universe does not align so that I have the subject, time and inspiration to draw, I create other things. Planning and designing a hand bound book is fun. It would surprise people how much thought goes into each aspect of each book, size, color, feel, images etc. Garden design is a not too distant second to drawing. Painting is in the mix as well, but it frustrates me, so not sure where it falls on the spectrum. There is more of a feel that I need to paint to improve, rather than I want to paint. One part of the creative painting process that is thoroughly enjoyable is framing canvas. Finding balance is easier when there are several identified creative outlets. I believe the trick is to know what those creative activities are then know when you are in the best frame of mind for any one or several at once, moving from one to another as you feel led. Im not especially good at balancing creative with work, but trying counts.
