So yesterday I got to see Unbroken which is a true story of a gentleman from Torrance. Calif. He thought he was nothing and going to be nothing because simply this is what people told him and how they treated him. One day hes under the bleachers watching his brother run track and looking up girls skirts lol and he gets caught so he runs away across the field. They all looked on in awe, so his brother decides to get him into track. He tells his bro just leave him alone, let him be nothing and his brother says If you can take it you can make it which wound up becoming a mantra that resonated through his life. His brothers belief in his talent made the kid wind up joining the track team and eventually went on to USC and had set a world record. He was also at the 1936 in Berlin and he was so impressive that even Hitler wanted to meet him and did. Imagine shaking Hitlers hand? Unreal the history this guy lived. They called him the Torrance Tornado. He was born in NY but the family moved to Torrance Calif so I have a personal interest in this story being that I went to school there and grew up in the South Bay Area. He was in the Air Force and one time his plane crashed into the sea and he and survived 33 days at sea (wait til you see that part of the movie) and in shark infested waters off of Oahu. He got rescued but by the Japanese who occupied the island at the time and he then became a POW and they thought he was killed so it wasnt til 2 yrs later that the Japanese had him on a radio show and his family learned he was alive but a POW. He became a Christian inspirational speaker on the subject of forgiveness (read the book and look up his wiki and it goes into more detail) but the spiritual theme ran secondary in this movie and the theme of perseverance ran first. Let me tell you once you see what this man endured, I will tell you that many of us would have broken down, given in, we wouldnt have survived what he did. If you need some inspiration, this is the movie for sure. There are some things I wish would have been shorter and other things longer to make up this over 2 hour movie but for what it is, I would say Jolie did a pretty good job and we all know Im not a fan of hers however I give credit where credit is due and she did a good job with this for what it was in teaching the theme of perseverance and not breaking. Heres something I found on an interview with both of them. https://youtube/watch?v=JvJ47C4kYN8
