So yesterday I was getting in my car at Lowes when I noticed the elderly man in the drivers seat of the car next to me had on a baseball cap with a United States Air Force logo and words on it. His window was open so I asked if he was a veteran. He said he was, and I thanked him for his service. I told him I was retired Army, my wife was retired Army, her father was retired Army, our son-in-law was a Marine wounded in Afghanistan, and my father was retired Air Force who flew a bomber out of England and bombed Germany during WW2. He asked me if Id ever lived in Germany, and I told him my father had been assigned to Wiesbaden when I was in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades, and my older sister had actually graduated from high school while we were there. He then told me he went to his first two years of school in Germany during the beginning of Hitlers rule. I almost fell over when he said that. Only then did I notice a slight accent. He said his older brother was actually in the German army, but once everything started going nuts, his whole family moved to the United States. As I shook his hand goodbye , I again thanked him for his service to America. Just think, if I hadnt made the first move I would have never heard his incredible story. May God bless our soldiers, both Active and retired.
