So you realize that your first entry into the tournament was as rebuttal speaker, and you were positioned to synthesize then rebutt. Your role was to shed doubt on the credibility and the plausibility of the opponents ideas. The positive speakers constructed arguments. But you were negative and you were there to weaken foundations, then demolish. Long before you understood what any of those were about, someone has whispered to your ear The opponents are very good. I will only ask you to do one thing. Neutralize the enemy., and you have never forgotten. And sometimes, in a random taxi ride, you realize you havent quite gotten over that role yet, but it was a long time ago. Life is a not debate and you dont always have to be rebutting. Many a good rebuttals have shielded and saved teams, onwards to victory. But no team wins by the sheer brilliance of whip alone. A house only stands by construction. The beauty of debate is in the balance of negative and positive. Like life.
