So you want to work on a Phase 1 archaeological survey. Please consider the following before applying: It will be too hot. It will be too cold. You will have to walk through water. There and back. You will encounter wild animals, including but not limited to: spiders, snakes, stinging insects, wild pigs, mean ass dogs, alligators, angry landowners. If you are a tech, you know that you could do a better job than your crew chief. If you are a crew chief, all of your techs know that they could do a better job than you. You wont like your living accommodations. If there is coffee, it will suck. You wont get along that well with people on your crew. You may get along too well with a person on your crew, but know that someone else on your crew may have already gotten along with that person. If you arent the drinking type, you may take it up. If you are the drinking type, you will wake up hungover at least once on this project. Yes, you still have to go to work. You can do this job for 150 years, and somebody will still tell you what you are doing wrong. Your pacing is off, everyone elses is always right. You will get lost in the woods. Everyone else never gets lost in the woods. The times everyone else got lost in the woods, they werent actually lost and knew where they were the whole time. Youll never find anything. Everyone else will find all the good sites. When you finally do find something, nobody will care. The vehicle stinks. Everyone else stinks. Your clothes stink. You stink. Yes, you have to go out in the rain. Yes, you have to dig that shovel test even if it is on a 90 degree slope. You have to dig all the shovel tests. When you are finished digging all the shovel tests, there are more shovel tests over there. You will walk into an impassible patch of briars and be unable to get out. You will turn around and find that the path that led you into this patch is now another impassible patch of briars. Know that a very distinct set of poor life choices led you to this patch of briars and you have no one to blame but yourself. Your family will continue to wonder when you are going to get a real job. Your friends will all think that its just like Indiana Jones. Never argue with them.
