Soap box moment! To all you black folks saying the Oscars only reward subservient roles. U obviously dont know your facts first off. Secondly, dont steal Ms. Lupitas wonderful moment with your overly sensitive negativity. Thirdly, the Oscars usually go to people who make a complete character transformation. That means there is always some kind of pain involved that is reflective of real life. And, just for the record - Jamie Foxx, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Denzel Washington (Training Day), and Sidney Poitier, etc won Oscars for other types of transformative roles. Slavery is a part of American history, if not one of the most significant parts of it (how this nation was built). I truly believe that if more people in modern times knew of the systemic oppression and harsh life that black people suffered for hundreds of years the root of the position of African-Americans and current issues we deal with today would have better context. We need to just stop it. Complain that more black films are not being made. Complain that we dont go support are own historic films. Dont complain because this woman won an Oscar for a transformative and wonderful performance in a historic film. Thats what wins Oscars for most people. That is all.
