Social engineering and the people who condemn it. (Just a bit - TopicsExpress

Social engineering and the people who condemn it. (Just a bit harsh, Im afraid.) When people condemn social engineering, they reveal themselves as idiots on two counts. 1) Organizing society based on demonstrated truth only makes sense. Whenever we organize around one ideology or another, it inevitably turns out badly for some at first, and eventually a disaster for everyone. 2) Everything in your life has already been engineered to try to bring you the most benefits possible for the least cost. Sometimes it works out better than other times. However, even the grass in your lawn has been selectively bred for its desirable qualities. Every bit of food you eat is also selectively bred and/or genetically modified. Every piece of personal property that you own was designed, built, and delivered by way of a logistical channel that was also engineered. The street you live on. Your house. The pluming and electrical in your house. Even your education has been engineered. Every way you get information has also been engineered except for maybe word of mouth, but if you belong to a church, that message was also engineered--as was the format, timing, and (to the greatest extent possible) the social millieu of the church itself. There is not one thing in your life that has not passed through some sort of human filter, and if it is any good at all, the humans involved applied some measure of scientific truth to make it that way. And as with any other scientific undertaking, the more accurately we can observe, and the more precisely we can express our theories (explanatory rules), the better our results will be. So, if you think you hate social engineering, what it means is that youve decided that the current version of society is fine with you--shortcomings and all--or that perhaps you prefer an earlier one in which you werent directly confronted with the consequences of its shortcomings. And that, if you ask me, is simply irresponsible.
