Social networking, fact or farce? Sometimes I wonder about things, like for instance this whole social networking thing. Face Book for instance. I mean is it really worth all the time and effort one puts into it? Does it not create expectations that does not live up to what it supposedly promise? Things like friends on Face Book, contacts on other like Linkedin and Google+. You keep on growing the network but very few contacts are really created that way. Even though it looks impressive from in front of your PC. At some point I had 5000 contacts on Linkedin. I have sent out mail to contact some of these contacts who seem to share my passion for wolves and art, but to date I have received one mail back. The mail said.. I dont do Linkedin.. Google + and Face Book are not much better. If I must count on how many friends I really made on Face Book I can count them on my two hands and will have fingers left. :) Yet my profile say 1687 friends. :P Personally I have to be honest. My organization The Wolf Army opened pages on Face Book in 2009. What the pages have achieved in comparison with what my own physical input off the pages has achieved there is no comparison. Own physical input cuts to the bone.. it gets me there pronto. Thats what I like about doing things myself. For instance. Facing a problem on The Wolf Army page that says ... 52000 likes one would expect to get lots of supporters to sign a petition on anti trapping. Trapping being the main mode for killing wolves. The Face Book route is really is not even remotely worth as much as picking up a phone, find the official or politician involved, state your case, drop the names of your influential contacts and you have immediate reaction and most of the time positive results. For the same thing done through FB I will have to make out a petition, send it through and around for days, months and even years to get 3000 signatures on a anti trapping petition, suffer immeasurable verbal abuse from Face Book enemies and sometimes friends alike. Then gather it all and have it delivered to the said politician or official, if I can find someone amongst the 52000 that is able and willing to deliver it, just to find later that they ignored the whole thing and dumped all the hard work in the waste.
