Socialist FAQs. Comments? Q. Isnt a business run by a socialist government more inefficient? A. It depends. Government run enterprises can be efficient or inefficient depending on how they are managed, whether the planning and organization adequate and whether there are corrupt practices that interfere with efficiency and quality. There are many examples of state-run enterprises that are very efficient and rank among the best in the world. Germany’s Deutsche Bahn is not only probably the best rail service in the world, it is also highly profitable. The United States state-run, state-subsidized universities overwhelmingly dominate the top lists in the quality of education they provide, and they are also profitable. The UK’s NHS (National Health Service) has also generally been very effective. On the other end of the spectrum, some private enterprises, such as Walmart are large enough to be bigger than the biggest state-run enterprises, indeed, bigger than entire economies. And yet they are run efficiently and profitably due to their vast organizational set up and planning apparatus. In conclusion, the government or a state-run enterprise isnt always inefficient if managed properly.
