Socialist FAQs. Comments? Q. What is the right of nations to self-determination? A. The right of nations to self-determination means that the people of a nation have the right to self-determine their own fate, to voluntarily decide whether they want to form a union with another nation or live separately under their own state. Just as citizens have the right to elect their own leaders and choose which system they want to live under, so too the people of a nation have the right to choose who they want to unite with or not unite with. However, too often, this discussion is framed from the point of view of a tiny minority of the population. The Capitalists, landlords, the ruling bureaucracy, the military leadership often decide on the behalf of the whole population. That is wrong, and it is not self-determination. True self-determination can only happen democratically in which the working classes who are the majority of a nation decide their fate.
