Sole Matter was born from a desire to equip students with more than the industry currently offers. Our founders felt compelled to create a dance company with a holistic approach, not only to challenge students to be exemplary dancers, but also exemplary servant-leaders. Sole Matter has solely grown from a grassroots and word-of-mouth movement. Since our very first audition in September of 2013, the momentum has far surpassed our expectations. We owe it all to the dancers who support us, and constantly inspire us to keep spreading the original mission that got us started: to develop servant-leaders through dance and community outreach. Servant-leadership is a lifelong journey that includes discovery of one’s self, a desire to serve others, and a commitment to lead. Servant-leaders continually strive to be trustworthy, self-aware, humble, caring, visionary, empowering, relational, competent, good stewards, and community builders. These characteristics are by no means exhaustive, but at heart, the individual is a servant first, making the conscious decision to lead in order to better serve others. Since our inception we’ve strived to create a culture of family, as well as an atmosphere of servant-leadership to enhance the growth of every student and increase teamwork and personal involvement in and out of the studio. “Sole Matter” has had different meanings to our students along the way. To some it is a family away from home, and to others it has been a deeper meaning dance company, or way to build confidence in order to help others and embrace the challenges of life. Sole Matter isn’t just about competing or holding workshops and master classes; it’s about changing lives and the soul of the dance industry by inspiring dancers to be postive agents of social change.
