Solidarity Conference For Western Sahara Holds In Abuja By: Raliat Ahmed-Yusuf on October 24, 2013 - 1:41am inShare The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC in collaboration with civil societies and movements of solidarity with the Saharawi people across the world is set to hold a conference for solidarity of the Western Sahara in Abuja. The 3-day conference with the theme: Liberation of Western Sahara: Ending Colonisation in Africa begins in Abuja from Oct.28th-30th, 2013. In a chat with LEADERSHIP, ambassador of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), to Nigeria Oubi Bachir said the decolonisation of Africa would not be complete without the full liberation of the Western Sahara, adding that “it is the last colony in Africa to be fully decolonized”. The envoy who disclosed that delegates from all over Africa, Europe and America are expected to attend, said the conference would look at the political situation in Western Sahara, the on-going human right abuses by Morocco on the occupied parts, illegal exploitation of natural resources of the Saharawi republic and discrimination against its people among others. It would be recalled that after 16 years of war between the Saharawi liberation movement (POLISARIO Front) and Morocco, in September 1991, the Organisation of African Unity now AU and the United Nations reached a cease-fire and a peace settlement agreement in which a referendum was supposed to be organized to enable the Saharawi people decide their future. “But Morocco backed by France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council seat had continued to block the path to recognition and self-determination of the Saharawi people”, Bachir said. The envoy expressed the hope that the all-important conference would draw more attention of the continental bodies (AU and UN), to assume their responsibilities towards the implementation of the peace settlement plan that will end the deadlock that has continued to deprive the Saharawi people from enjoying their independence.
