Solomon Danmori wrote... ARE WE A TEAM OR A GANG? I have heard severally that the health sector or system is a team, that all member profession are team members. Our work has been described as team work and our effort is regarded as team effort. As a team we are told there is a team leader or head, who is giving charge of the team. Here it is said that the head of the medical team is the medical Doctor and it has been said that it is the a natural right of the Doctor to head the team. The question here is, when did the health system become a team and when did they choose the Doctors to head the team? The answer to that is that there has never been a time like that. But even it be so, are we really a team? NO!!!!! A team which tries to make one player dominant while others are left at the background ceased to be a team but a gang. It is not a new thing for us to notice our so called team leader working only for their good to the detriment of other team members. The systemic failure of our health sector is actually as a result of leadership failure and also due to lack of team effort. Where a team exist an one party takes us the monopoly of leading can only lead to the kind of failure we are experiencing in the Nigerian health system A team leader is actually supposed to be first among equal, whose power is given to him or her willingly by the team member for the good of all members. The team functions as a machine with each part looking out for the other knowing fully well that the failure of one can lead to total collapse. The team leaders’ role is that of coordinating and bringing synergy to the team. While on the other hand, a gang does not operate as such. The gang is made up of a pack of people who are all working toward the same objective but each trying to dominate the other. The rule for a gang is survival of the fittest. Leading a gang does not require consensus but brutal force and it is winner take it all. It is common knowledge that all gangs are headed by alpha personalities, whose preoccupation is dominance. The gang leader takes it all and gives out only what pleases him and only so as to maintain his dominance. So my question, IS OUR HEALTH SYSTEM IN NIGERIA A TEAM OR A GANG???????
