Somalia Security Agents Receive Judicial Protection - TopicsExpress

Somalia Security Agents Receive Judicial Protection Training Roughly 100 Somali security agents from the Somalia National Police (SPF), Somalia Custodial Corps and security officers from Somalia’s Attorney General’s office, have completed an intensive training course in Mogadishu. Training was conducted by the United Nations (UN) and AMISOM Police with support from the European Union, as well as UNMAS. The course aimed to improve the technical skills and overall capacity of security forces to protect VIPs, particularly judicial personnel, who have become prime targets among anti-peace militias in Somalia, “Training went on for 10 days and we learned how to secure VIPs. It was really useful and the trainers were also very good. Our officers were very eager to learn,” said Mohamed Abdulle Ali, a senior correctional officer. “Now I know how to respond to certain challenges and I have also learnt a lot about preventing crimes, how to save lives, how to protect VIPs and the various tactics employed by security agents. We have learnt a lot and I’m sure it will be very helpful and there will be visible changes when we get back to our work stations,” added Sahal Farah Guled, a Somali police officer. Training focused specifically on how to shield and protect VIP motorcades, what to do when under attack and how to react without exposing VIPs to more danger. The trainees were also taught to identify a number of explosives used by attackers. “The course is very unique in two major ways. Firstly, this is the first time we are bringing Somali police, correction and the judicial system in Somalia together,” said AMISOM’s training coordinator, Dr. Benjamin Agordzo. The UN was impressed by a joint initiative with AMISOM to develop and deliver such a specific course for Somali security agencies, one that reflects challenges on the ground. Peter Faulhaber, civilian police project manager for Somalia, says the course was tailored to address specific challenges the trainees will be required to address while on active duty. “On preparation, with our [colleagues] from AMISOM, we created a course that satisfied all the conditions for protecting judges. It includes motorcades, close protection, sight security, wands, bomb detection and a few other things. Thats what took place in the last couple of weeks,” Faulhaber said. Training courses like these are an integral part of efforts to improve the capacity of Somalia’s security forces to protect and defend the country’s borders and its citizens.
