Some 12 years ago when I met Monhla Hlahla at an event, I was young and impressionable, I thoroughly loved and admired her, I looked up to her. I nervously went to her table and introduced myself. She was warm and approachable, we made small talk. I told her I want to be like her when I grow up. She said no way Lebo, dont be like me, be better than me. I never forgot that. One of the things that some mentors and the people that others look up to must learn and learn it fast is that, when they mentor or inspire or motivate others - they are doing so in order to inspire growth and progress. Growth and progress that may even surpass theirs. It frustrates me when I see these people who are revered shun those that have looked up to them when they begin to rise. When the mentee begins to rise the mentor shuns them....?? As mentors and as people whom others look to for encouragement, inspiration and motivation we aught to ask ourselves hard questions: What is the point of mentoring others when their rise threatens ours? Why must others remain beneath us? Why must others be perpetually in our shadow? The true mark of a leader is the one who creates other leaders.
