Some Catskills residents argue that bear hunting is a popular - TopicsExpress

Some Catskills residents argue that bear hunting is a popular sport in the area and that it is already keeping the population manageable, said Ramsey Adams, Executive Director of Catskill Mountainkeeper, an environmental advocacy organization in the region. This years Catskills population is between 1,500 and 2,000 black bears, he said. While the DEC plan rightly acknowledges the Catskills nuisance bear problem, it assumes that the problem should be solved by reducing all bears in the area, he said. Expanding the hunting season is not the best way to deal with the problem, Adams said. Youve got to deal with the problem bears themselves … if they get used to being around people, thats when youve got a problem.
