Some Thoughts for the Week How we communicate matters today. Listening, really listening to what someone else is saying is important. Sharing our thoughts and ideas is important. Engaging and encouraging people of any age to share their opinion, their passion and vision is important. In a world diagnosed with a spiritual deficit, communication may just be what we need to discover Justice and Peace in our neighborhoods, cities and countries. I had the good fortune to meet with a group working on “Fair wages” called the Interfaith Airport Community at the Somali Community Center in Seattle this week. In this multi-cultural multi-ethnic setting there was no deficit of the spirit. This was communication at it’s best: Everyone listened – Everyone shared at the table. Sometimes my frustration bubbles over and I feel I have to speak up or I will be suffocated by my own silence. In these moments, or maybe in reflection, I am realizing if the people who need to hear the message are not listening, then the kid in my speech class forty years ago was right, “You are just full of hot air.” How we communicate is changing, and changing fast. A key to unlock the Spirit is discovering ways in all our diversity to help people listen. At the grocery store, I could not understand why all the little girls about five years old were smiling at me, on the way out of the store I realized, I was wearing my Mickey Mouse tie. Could it be so simple: God’s still small voice is the medium and Justice and Peace is the message.
