Some aggrieved supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State have burnt the party’s secretariat in the area, Daily Trust learnt. The aggrieved supporters also destroyed President Goodluck Jonathan and Senator Gyang Pwajok’s campaign posters. Our correspondent gathered from sources in Kanke that the incident took place on New Year Day when worshipers were still observing cross-over prayers in various churches. The immediate cause of the violence was linked to an alleged diversion of some Christmas and New Year gifts meant for the people of the local government by government and party officials. But a source told our correspondent that the angry youths burnt the secretariat as a result of crisis rthat emanated from the recent governorship primary poll in which Pwajok emerged as the party’s candidate. The youths were said to have accused the PDP of imposing Pwajok who recently picked former commissioner of lands and survey Arch. Yilji Gomwalk from Kanke as his running mate. The source revealed that the security guards attached to the PDP secretariat were not present at the time of the incident. Commenting on the incident, the PDP governorship running mate Arch. Yilji Gomwalk described the act as barbaric and uncivilised, urging the people to desist from any criminal act capable of portraying them in bad light. Gomwalk stressed that Kanke was a stronghold of PDP, adding that “no amount of mischief and intimidation can deter the people from supporting.
