Some background for those who are unfamiliar with SAE Baja (Society of Automotive Engineering - a trade organization not a professional society). Each year a collection of US and international (India, Venezuala, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and middle East) colleges and universities participate in one of three Baja competitions (East, Midwest, and West); we were in Midwest this year - Rochester, NY (yeah, yeah, I know NY is not in the Midwest). In this completion the students from scratch each year and design, build, and test a small all terrain vehicle. Then at the end of the academic year there is a three day competition: day one is the static events - design inspection and tech/safety inspection; day two is a collection of dynamic events - maximum speed, maneuverability, traction, suspension test, and then location specific events; day three is the endurance race where the vehicles race around a speedway teack as many times as possible in four hours. There are then prizes for the individual events, and for the overall completions. There also points given for the design reports and a cost report.
