Some christians believe the Bible is all about the nation of Israel being placed back into the literal land. And others believe the Bible is all about the redemption of Israel. They say this sound hermeneutic and logic. But read along with me Hebrews 10.6-7 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. There is not any doubt that the writer of Hebrews lifted these two verses from Psalm 40.6-8 and applied the passage to his argument that Jesus is the predicted and the perfect sacrifice for man’s sins, Hebrews 10.10 clears the matter up once and for all that Jesus is the predicted and the perfect sacrifice for man’s sins. Our interest, however, is in the meaning of the parenthetical phrase, “in the volume of the book it is written of me.” What did the Lord Jesus Christ mean when He said, “in the volume of the book it is written of me”? This referred to the volume of God’s eternal purpose that was written of Him that He should come into the world to do God’s mighty work that was foreordained before the foundation of the world. The word “volume” translated in the Greek originally is referring to a knob at the end of a rod in which a scroll, was wound a sand then eventually referred to the scroll of scripture itself. Thus, in Psalm 40.7 and Hebrews 10.7, it is the Word of God that is being referred to, specifically the Old Testament. What the Lord Jesus Christ is declaring by this statement is that the volume of the of Old Testament was speaking of him. John 5:39 NKJV You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. Hebrews 10.6 reminds us of what the Jewish people had learned a thousand years earlier when David recorded the words. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. For centuries, the Jewish people observed the system of ordinances and animal sacrifices prescribed by the Law of Moses, with their sins only temporarily covered, only atoned, by the blood of bulls and goats, giving God no satisfaction whatsoever. When sins are atoned, they are only covered, rather than being removed. Then, a thousand years before the time of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, He spoke to His Father words that were recorded for the Jews benefit by David in Psalm 40.7: “Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.” Christ whispered into David’s ear by inspiration, relating to David the words the Son of God had spoken to God the Father: “Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.” To confirm that the entirety of the system of sacrifices and offerings found in the Law of Moses was always really about the once for all time sacrifice of Jesus for sins, take a look at Hebrews 10.8-9: Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. God has taken away the first, the system of sacrifices and the offering up of the blood of bulls and goats, so that He may establish the second, which alone gives Him great pleasure, being that unique sacrifice which actually remits or washes away sins, the blood of Jesus Christ. With this understood, I invite you to consider that all scripture testifies of Christ. When Christ speaks of the “volume of the book” He is specifically talking about the Old Testament scriptures. When Christ came we hear from His own lips constantly such statements as this: “...that the scriptures might be fulfilled...as the scriptures have said...it is written...” All of this reveals that His whole life was conducted in line with the written word of the Old Testament. He is specifically talking about the Old Testament scriptures. The Old Testament is all about Christ every part of it. There is a beautiful unity between the Old and New Testaments in revealing the person of Christ. They speak with one voice. John.5:46-47 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” If you cannot accept the Old Testament writings as inspired and valuable as a revelation of Christ then you will miss Christ in the New Testament. Luke 24:45:46 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise [fn] from the dead the third day. Luke 24:44-45, Now He said to them, These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Notice that Jesus speaks about what is written regarding him in the Old Testament. Then Luke writes that Jesus opened their mind to understand the Scriptures. What Scriptures? The Law (Moses), the Prophets, and the Psalms. Now this is sound hermeneutic and logic.
