At the end of the song he jokes, “That’s it, man, fourteen years right down the drain.” 1970 – Jimi Hendrixs Electric Ladyland Studios opens for business in Greenwich Village in New York City. 1970 – Duane Allman joins Eric Clapton and his new group Derek And The Dominos under the stipulation that he takes part in the recording sessions. 1970 – The three-day Isle Of Wight festival begins at East Afton Farm. The festival actually lasts five days, and runs through August 30. He will re-join the group to stay in 1988. 1981 – Ottawa Mayor Marion Dewar declares the day “Paul Anka Day,” to celebrate the singer’s 25th anniversary in show business. 1983 – The movie Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, starring David Bowie, opens in theaters. 1987 – Sonny Bono announces his candidacy for mayor of Palm Springs, California. 1988 – The 26th Reading Festival begins in England. Artists performing during the three-day event include The Smithereens, Starship, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Hot House Flowers, Gene Loves Jezebel, Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler, Deacon Blue, The Wonderstuff, John Hiatt, Runrig and others. 1989 – Ringo Starr wins a court order to prevent the release of material he considers to be of inferior quality due to his impaired state while recording. 1990 – Randy Newman wins an unlikely Emmy for his score to the legendary ABC-TV flop series, Cop Rock. 1990 – Eric Clapton plays the second of two nights at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, with opening acts Robert Cray with The Memphis Horns, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The night’s encore is a jam of Robert Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago,” featuring Clapton, Cray and Vaughan, along with guests Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray’s brother, Jimmy Vaughan. The concert is Stevie Ray Vaughan’s last. 1993 – A double-sided acetate recording of The Beatles playing Kansas City and Some Other Guy at the Cavern Club in Liverpool in 1962 fetches approximately $32,000 at Christies auction house in London. 1994 – Scottish singer/songwriter Frankie Miller suffers a brain hemorrhage while in New York, lapsing into a five-month coma. 1997 – Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith crashes his motorcycle on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, and is hospitalized with a dislocated shoulder. 2000 – Pam Tillis joins the Grand Ole Opry. 2000 – The body of Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule bassist Allen Woody is found dead sitting up in a chair at the Marriott Courtyard Motel in Queens, New York. An autopsy is inconclusive. 2001 – Madonna performs at the Palace of Auburn Hills in her hometown of Detroit on her Drowned World Tour. The show is filmed for video release. 2002 – Peter Noone files an unsuccessful lawsuit against former Herman’s Hermits drummer Barry Whitwam, attempting to block him from touring with new musicians under the group name. 2003 – Rolling Stone magazine names Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist in rock history. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Ry Cooder also make the Top 10 list. 2004 – Concert film cinematographer David Myers dies after suffering a stoke at age 90. Myers’ film credits include Woodstock, Elvis On Tour, The Last Waltz, Mad Dogs And Englishmen, and The Grateful Dead Movie. 2005 – A Los Angeles post office near the studio where Ray Charles recorded many of his hits is renamed the Ray Charles Station. 2005 – A plaque is unveiled by Quarrymen John Duff Lowe and Colin Hanton at the site of Percy Philips’ studio in Liverpool where the band made their first recordings of “Thatll Be The Day” and “In Spite Of All The Danger.” 2005 – Green Day is named “Best Band on the Planet” at the 12th annual Kerrang! Rock Awards. They also win best live act. 2007 – Police raid the home of rapper DMX and find 12 neglected pit bull terrier dogs and a number of guns. The bodies of three more dogs are found buried. No arrests are made, and DMX tells police he has not been at the property in Arizona for at least two months. 2007 – After more than two years and 147 shows, The Rolling Stones play the final date of their A Bigger Bang Tour at the O2 Arena in London. The tour nets the band more than $500 million. 2008 – 34 years after the film’s release, the music soundtrack for Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles is released on La-La Land Records.
