Some exciting new from Dunnett today. Here we go... After several years of development work on the Dunnett Classic Drums iphone app is 99.9% complete. While the app is not slated for publication until early 2015, there are some features I want to publicly disclose. There are countless methods and machines for tuning drums. What I have found - and what I teach in my workshops - is that most of these tools lack a fundamental understanding of the instrument itself and that is that generally speaking, we do not play A drum. We play a set of drums. In a word it is all about intervals. The Dunnett Classic Tone-O-Meter™ offers an extraordinarily simple proprietary system based on intervals, tensions and sonic values. A Pairing Method is part of the Tone-O-Meter™ system. It is equipped with a set of high definition, multi-dimensional Dunnett Classic Titanium tom samples recorded by engineer John Emrich. The Tone-O-Meter™ does not rely on parameters like musical notes, frequencies or even tom size - those are irrelevant, making this system exceptionally efficient and easy to use. The Pairing Method works by first selecting the number of toms in your set up. You then choose a desired tension for each tom. You can adjust the tension of each tom higher or lower and position each tom along a linear scale and adjust the interval between any tom - the same as you would when you set up an actual drum set. Tapping each tom on the screen triggers a corresponding drum sample through the iphone speaker or through an external device like headphones, monitors of even front of house PA. There are also interval play buttons that allow you to play the sequence of drum tensions you have chosen, playing them from highest to lowest or vice versa. I believe this system is one the best approaches to teaching, learning and establishing melodic intervals on a set of drums because it provides a clear and concise user-chosen sonic objective. - effectively a simple yet eloquent paint-by-numbers method for tensioning drums.
