Some good news to help usher in Shabbat Chanukah: (reposted from a daily dose of kindness) When I returned to Israel after a recent trip, my suitcase could not be found on the airport carousel. One of the El Al workers ran around trying to find out if there were any more suitcases still on the plane or any other nearby carousel. We soon realized that there was one very similar to mine, and the tag even had the same surname as mine, but lacked my distinctive identifying decoration. The El Al worker, David, was able to check the passenger list and find out that the owner was a member of the large Birthright group which had been on my plane - which seemed to indicate that most probably that the young owner had hastily grabbed my suitcase, which looked so much like hers.... David tried calling the group leaders, to see if they were still in the airport, but they didnt answer. So he advised me to go register my report of my missing suitcase and hope that it would soon be located and returned to me. Tired, discouraged and disappointed, I was finally able to go out to my children who had been worriedly waiting for me for more than an hour after other passengers from my plane had come out. But just after we got hugs and kisses all around, David came running over to me, delighted that I was still there: he had actually located the Birthright bus and verified that they had my suitcase! What a relief to actually get it back before I headed home.... All this took over an hour of his running back and forth, while continually reassuring me with his smile and telling me to sit meanwhile. And then he went to the extra effort of running out to the bus, and then running back to look for me out in the reception area . I really was impressed and wanted to offer him a tip for all his extra efforts - but he adamantly refused. Kindness out of empathetic altruism, for the sake of helping, not with expectation of remuneration. So in front of my children, I reiterated my detailed expression of thanks for his graciousness and caring and alacrity and perseverance in looking for more possible solutions- and asked for his name so that I could write a letter of commendation to El Al that their representative had given me such a warm wonderfully kind welcome home to my beloved Land of Israel. Who is like you Israel! - reposted from a daily dose of kindness. Dec 19, 2014.
