Some happy news to start your week... This little super human, well known to a lot of the gym users, is Kathy Mc Geady and she has kindly allowed me to use her story to help inspire and motivate. Kathy developed rheumatoid arthritis shortly after her 21st birthday, resulting in the end of her nursing career. At times her bones are so badly inflamed that movement is nearly impossible. Over the years Kathys wrists have completely fused together severely restricting movement in the lower arm, so everyday tasks that we all take for granted like opening a jar, putting on a coat or writing become increasingly difficult. She started strength training with me almost a year ago after reading about the benefits weights have for the health of women. But we had one problem... Squats with the bar across the shoulders was impossible for Kathy as her wrists were never going to have the flexibility to hold the bar in place! We had to compromise with a front squat which resulted in a lot of brusing for some time and restricted muscle development in the same way regular squats would. Kathy always watched people squatting with the bar on their back and longed to do that... But what she didnt know was that a safety squat bar existed, a bar specifically designed for shoulder and wrist injuries that allows you to squat with the bar on the back as effectively as a regular bar. What Kathy also didnt know was that I had been putting aside a little every week to save up and buy a safety bar for her which I was able to purchase last week, resulting in a very emotional and happy moment for both of us! This inspiring woman does not choose to focus on what she cant do.. But on what she can do. Everyone in the gym is in awe of Kathy, her strength and how she refuses to accept her limitations as defeat. Heres hoping for many happy Squat-filled years to come! #TeamAHF 💪
