Some highlights from Andres Dubus IIIs talk earlier tonight (paraphrased): --The most important quality in a successful writer isnt talent; its curiosity. --Writing gets better not when youre gripped with a story to tell, but a story you want to discover. --Just because we know what happened doesnt mean we know what the hell happened. Memoir helps us put things together, re-member them. --If the mad dog comes at you, whistle for him --Dont worry about being a success; worry about growing as a writer. --When you outline, you send a message to your imagination that you dont trust it, and then your imagination doesnt trust you either and doesnt show up. --You have a sacred obligation to give your characters all of your curiosity and compassion. --If theres any enemy to creativity, its self-consciousness. I also really liked hearing that he wrote The House of Sand and Fog in notebooks in his car, parked next to a graveyard, for 17 minute stretches before and after work each day.
