Some important information from Susan Scanlan concerning the National Womens History Museum and the part DKG women of Alpha Alpha State can play .................................... The National Women’s History Museum could sure use your help. I’m hoping you’ve heard the good news that—against all odds!—we got a bill through the House establishing a National Commission to investigate the need for a women’s museum on (and off) the Mall. The scope of this victory includes getting then-Minority Leader Eric Cantor to take the lead in pushing for and passing the legislation. And see what happened to him immediately thereafter. We are working our tails off to get the exact same language passed in a Senate bill, introduced by Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Susan Collins (R-ME). (If they change even a word from the House version, then it would have to re-pass the House and the odds against that are astronom- ical.) Harry Reid is going to place the bill on the suspension calendar (this is a procedure for non-controversial bills, where there is an up-or-down vote and no amendments). The problem with this easy route toward passage is that one Senator can voice an objection and the bill is killed. So here’s why DKG/PA is critical. We know that one Republican Senator has indicated he might object to the bill, but we can’t find out who. The R’s are playing a shell game whereby we visit one office after another and are told that it’s not that Senator who is considering an objection. And we have received face-to-face denials from the usual suspects like Tom Coburn and Saxby Chambliss that they are objecting. Our sources now tell us that the objection has been placed by—wait for it!—your very own Senator Toomey as a favor to his vastly more conservative friend, Mike Lee of Utah. We have been unable to get a confirmation on this, but the pool of eligible villains is growing slower and he’s still in it. So here’s what you could do to help. Get all possible members of DKG to write a short, personal note (you know, with paper and a stamp in black or blue/black ink) expressing their support for the Museum as teachers, as women, and as upstanding VOTERS in Pennsylvania. The address is The Honorable Pat Toomey 248 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 Those not in possession of a stamp could send an eloquent email to the same effect. There’s an email format on the Senator’s home page that you must fill in with a name and address to show you’re a citizen of Pennsylvania. It’s at toomey.senate.gov/?p=contact Finally, those who don’t wish to write could call. Here is Toomey’s DC office number: 202-224-4254 A big show of support from the formidable female teachers of the Keystone State might shock him away from this cowardly position of black-balling a bill that only investigates the possibility of a museum and doesn’t cost the nation a penny. We will be paying for the cost of the Commission and, of course, have stated that we’d pay for the construction and maintenance of the building. Anything you could do to rally the troops as quickly as possible – the vote is coming this month...
