Some interesting differences between the US and the UK. when they say coffee, they mean it. So much better than in the US, even at McDonalds (yes, they have those too). Most people drink instant coffee at home. Had to buy a coffee press. Most housing began as Council Housing (read public housing) many many years ago. However, residents were given the opportunity to purchase their homes and did. Most houses are designed to last for centuries, from rock or brick. When the houses begin to rundown, they gut them, put in new windows, and everything. The architecture is beautiful and most has been around for centuries. There are no screens on windows because there are apparently no flies or mosquitoes. There are many different types of commodes, including very old fashioned ones that had tanks mounted high up on the wall. Almost every old house has a story. When you come to visit, EVERYONE offers tea, coffee, and a variety of treats, one of which is Victoria Sponge, which is divine. Although most tourists avoid eye contact, most locals are extremely friendly. Did I mention architecture? The British REALLY know how that is done. Churches are magnificent. You can walk to within about 100 feet of #10 Downing Street. People take public transportation and walk everywhere, so everyones pretty fit. Public transportation is so prevalent, lots of folks get around fine without a car. There are tons of wind mills. When theyve made enough electricity, they turn them off. Airport security is nowhere as weird or suspicious as in the US. However, I was identified as a beeper and wander and patted down twice. I was beeping all over. I asked if she was going to strip search me, she said, no, not your lucky day. Will post more in comments as I think of it.
