Some more info on the schooner Ahnapee. When she was wrecked, she was carrying 100,000 feet of pine lumber, when she landed on some rocks. According to a Sheboygan Press article printed years later, Ole Groh and James Louden, two of Sheboygans pioneer lake captains undertook the task of salvaging the schooner and cargo, which were purchased by the late Ole Groh. The cargo of lumber was successfully unloaded and taken ashore, after which the schooner was jacked up from the bottom and dragged to shore. In the meantime, disputes and misunderstandings which arose between the two men were the direct cause of breaking up all salvage operations and abandoning the idea of further rescue of the ship. Neighbors living in the vicinity of the wreck soon began chopping her up, with axes, piece by piece, and carried the wood to their homes, using it for fire-wood.
