Some news from France for all my english speaking friends... From 14 September 2014, a new decree was published providing rules for the accreditation of new schools of osteopathy in France. This new legal document has been launched by the French Government and sets out 24 criteria that schools will need to fulfil in order to have the authorisation to provide training in osteopathy at diploma level which is necessary to practice osteopathy. The main criteria are as follows : - Schools are a part or higher private education schools; consequently, they must respect French standards of higher education ,which is defined in a group of laws. As higher education providers, they are overseen by the Minister for Higher Education. - Each school must have their own governance councils/committees, as follows: scientific council, education council, disciplinary, assessment of outcomes council. - Premises must be only dedicated to osteopathic education. - Premises surface area must be at least 5 square meters for each student being present in the school in the same time. - The school dean must be an osteopath and graduated at a master level in management, or have at least five years of management experience. - Teachers must be osteopaths with at least five years experience or healthcare practitioners or have graduated at a master level in education sciences, health, sciences or taught discipline. Teachers must be qualified in the discipline they teach. Academic team must consist of at least 50% osteopaths. - The school academic team must be at least one full-time equivalent for each 25 students and have one educational facilitator per year (5). - Non academic staff must should be at least one full-time equivalent for each 100 students. - A practical clinical education must be organized for at least 2/3 within the school. Each student must complete at least 150 consultations with real patients by the end of their osteopathic education. - Each school must be able to demonstrate its financial ability for one year. - Each school must organize and publish a professional survey each year (18 and 30 months after graduation) showing how successful graduates have been in the workplace (e.g. they have a job, earning) This new regulation will be applied from September 2015. Current schools accreditation ends on 31 August, whereby all schools which would like to seek accreditation must fulfill an accreditation form between 1 January – 28 February. A new accreditation committee, including osteopathic representatives, will be launched by the beginning of 2015. This committee will assess all schools’ accreditation form by the end of April. A professional demographic regulation will be organized. The number of students for which schools will be accredited for depends on the smallest denominator as follows: - Premises surface area; - Clinic activity (number of patients treated each year); - Academic and administrative staff; - Technical and pedagogic means. The next step is a decree specifying osteopathic education standards and curricula, which will be 5 years. This decree will also include definitions and osteopathic practice and skills standards. It should be launched by French Government by the end of this year.
