Some notable rookies played for the first time in NFL action this week and through the weekend. Quarterbacks: Teddy Bridgewater was 6-13 for 49 yards in a 10-6 victory over the Oakland Raiders. While he didnt play awfully he looked a little rushed against pressure and was not overly impressive. Veteran QB Matt Cassel played one series and was 5-6 for 62 yards on the drive, so he currently is probably in the drivers seat for the No. 1 job, though a lot could change in the next three weeks. Johnny Manziel was 7-11 for 63 yards in his NFL debut, a 13-12 loss to the Detroit Lions. The No. 22 overall pick is in a battle with veteran Brian Hoyer for the starting job, who was 6-14 for 92 yards on Saturday night. Manziel showed good arm strength and accuracy against a second-string defense, but can he continue that next week once he faces NFL starters? Well see. Blake Bortles was 7-11 for 117 yards in his first NFL action, a 16-10 victory versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He showed good arm strength and accuracy against the second-string Buccaneers defense. He is currently in a battle with Chad Henne for the starting QB job. Runningbacks: Bishop Sankey had 13 carries for 37 yards in his NFL debut, a 20-16 win versus the Green Bay Packers for the Titans. He is competing with Shonn Greene for the No. 1 RB spot. Carlos Hyde impressed in his first NFL action, running on 5 carries for 39 yards as the starting runningback of the 49ers, and showing a nice mix of speed, power, vision and agility. Frank Gore did not play, though he will be starting once the season begins. The Black Mamba, DeAnthony Thomas from Oregon took a kickoff return to the house in a 41-39 win for the Chiefs over the Bengals. A dark horse for runningbacks so far? Andre Williams. Despite having a season in the NCAA in which he ran for over 2,000 yards for Boston College and was a Heisman Trophy finalist, he fell to the fourth round and into the arms of the New York Giants. He has averaged almost 6 yards per carry so far and has impressed the Giants. Hes gonna get some touches behind Rashad Jennings. WRs, TEs, and Defense coming up next.
