Some of Miras sparkling History & English output: an essay, America: Life in the Roaring Twenties. This essay is both a eulogy for a fine lady, America, and it also personifies the nation in the 1920s. There was the fine essay she wrote for me a couple of years ago, a travelog on a journey thru south eastern China, in search of the elusive South China tiger. This came from her American History segment on the Roaring Twenties, followed by the Great Depression. Typed--- for those who cant read the scans. America: A life in the Roaring Twenties From birth, I watched her grow. I helped her learn to walk and speak. Having been there, I knew she would excel to prosperity and luxury. She was very bright and jumpy. She was also never afraid to put others in their place. America had an open nature. She loved all people, black, white, brown, red. She could walk amongst the commoners. Her beaming smile lit up the whole world with joyous song. America used to say Hello; which to some might seem like just one word, but to others it was the difference between life and death. Hello was a new beginning for many. Now to remember her times. She was just beginning to unfold her creativity. Each day she would create something new, whether it be a song, a car, or even two lines of wording. Either way, it was always beautiful. I remember at dinner parties she was the person who never stopped talking, America spoke up if she wanted something. She spoke for her friends, family, and enemies. She spoke with her friends, family, and boy, did she speak with her enemies! She could talk nonstop for ten days… and then weeks straight on some simple point. I also recall that she loved nothing more than singing, dancing. America was still known for her swift moves, in dance parlors, she was always among the last couples on the dance floor. She loved flapping her wings and kicking he high-heeled shoes. At times, her shoes would fly right off, and even bare feet she kept up her swift steps! Sadly, having your head in the clouds is a risky way to live. The dangers that surround you are deadly, more villainous, more foul. The worst part is the heavy fog of pride and wealth which blinds you. America, at the age of 18, did not see it coming. She overlooked the dangers, and plunged into darkness. We all grieve her news, the loss of the most creative child, the one who believed anything was possible. America was something revolutionary. Im glad I was there thru it all, from her bobbed hair, flagpole sitting, and a good sense of freedom! by Mira Plassmann, Grade 7, Blacksburg Middle School.
