Some of my Zambian women friends are upset with the leaking of the Alangizi video. The video shows the Alangizi or Womens Instructor of cultural affairs deeply involved in an erotic dance possibly instructing women at a Chezela on how they must make love to their man. A chezela is a womens only instruction event. At these events, women are taught how to behave when in marriage. It is interesting how it is expected for women to go through such intense guerrilla training while men are expected to know how to behave. What this shows us is that society places pressure on our womenfolk to please men and men are expected to naturally know how to reciprocate. The anger following the Revelation of this secret procedure is also telling of the systematic need to keep this system secret and away from criticism. The power of this culture is in the mystic and the mystery. Do we need this system? Is it not responsible for the current acceptable subjugation of women and the derision of women who do not go through this training?
