Some of the amazing craftsmanship at Timberline Lodge, Government Camp, Clackamas County, Oregon. Mount Hood National Forest. Historic American Buildings Survey, Library of Congress Significance: Timberline Lodge was the largest recreational project undertaken by the Works Progress Administration in Oregon during the 1930s. The lodges architectural and artistic significance lies in its integration of exterior, interior and landscape design motifs that express regional cultural traditions. Architects on the project called this aesthetic Cascadian to recall the mountain environment of the Cascade range. The lodge has played a key role in Oregons recreational history. It represents an historical example of a successful cooperative effort between government agencies, private companies and non-profit organizations to provide a government-owned recreational facility for public enjoyment.
