Some of you know that I have written about the singer Asmahan. One of her memorable performances was of “Ya Habibi Ta`ali” by Madhat Assim https://youtube/watch?v=AslWrVgBWQo Mourad Ben Cheikh (a music-lover, but not the cineaste) sent me some links which suggest a common origin. If anyone is interested in the mystery of the similarity between the Cuban and Arabic songs, do let me know if you discover anything. The first is here by a great Cuban singer who wanted to sing classical music, but recorded many popular tunes: Antonio Machin (1903, Cuba -1977, Madrid, Spain) . “El Huerfanito” (The Orphan) 1967. Do you hear the virtually identical notation to to Asmahan’s “Ya Habibi Ta3li” ? https://youtube/watch?v=tLnAWgfPUmQ You can hear it even more clearly here in the recording by Trio La Rosa (de Cuba): “Huerfano Soy,” https://youtube/watch?v=G-icl7KiEDY The Trio La Rosa’s (Juan Francisco de la Rosa, director, Julio León Serrano and Juan Antonio Serrano) information about the group is here (Spanish): sandritocubanito.blogspot/2012/08/biogarfia-del-trio-la-rosa.html By the way, here is a very lovely re-arrangement of this song by the Kronos Quartet on their Floodplain album by Nonesuch #7559798288 https://rdio/artist/Kronos_Quartet/album/Floodplain/track/Ya_Habibi_Ta%27ala/
