Some of you know that Ive been posting a lot about feeling unsafe as a Black man in the States. Well, Ive been pretty publicly going at it with one of my best friends on the topic and tonight was no exception in private messages; respectful but passionate. Then, he asked if I ever had a cop pull a gun on me. To which I responded, Twice. I was 12 or 13 the first time, they were looking for some burglary suspects. My mom, good Samaritan, let the police into our apartment when they asked to come in. The suspects were two black young men, and myself and my sisters boyfriend at the time fit the bill. There were no specifics of height, clothing, etc. Just black men. my mother protested when they tried to remove us from the apartment and thats when they reached for their guns, in my house. We made it downstairs before some other officers apprehended the actual culprits down the street. He thinks this is the story I should tell in order to get my point across about my not feeling safe in the States. Well see if it makes a difference.
