Some of you might be interested in attending a talk at the University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay Campus on Friday 30th January at 4pm in Room 477a Humanities Building. Visiting military historian, Dr John Greenacre, will deliver a talk titled: I Consider an Example Should be Made; The Trial of Private Benjamin Hart. Dr Greenacre examines the life, arrest, court martial and execution of a soldier local to the town of the university John works with. It uses all his original court martial documents and other primary sources. This might be of interest given Australia didnt execute any of its soldiers. Dr Greenacre has travelled with the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize to the Western Front for the last three years and will travel with the group once again this year. He served in the British Army for 24 years and is now an occasional lecturer at University Campus Suffolk and a battlefield guide. In 2013 he was appointed the Suffolk Centenary Coordinator, responsible for coordinating outreach activity centred on the centenary of the First World War. This includes academic, community and educational outreach activity across Suffolk with particular emphasis on working with schools throughout the county. Having travelled with John to the Western Front in 2012 I can attest to his engaging manner in imparting his knowledge about the battlefields of Europe. He has an ability to bring a human face to the experiences of war and I encourage you to attend his talk on Friday 30th January. Please RSVP to me by return email [email protected] if you would like to attend. The talk should go for approximately one hour and attendees are invited to stay for refreshments following the talk. Hope to see some of you there!
