( THREE DEAD IN TAVERN FIRE IN MIDDLETOWN, OHIO AP , Associated Press Dec. 11, 1988 12:00 AM ET MIDDLETOWN, OHIO MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) _ A deep fryer exploded in the kitchen of a tavern-restaurant Saturday night, setting off a fire that destroyed the two-story building and killed three women, authorities said. The fire was reported about 7 p.m. and was brought under control two hours later, said assistant Fire Chief Roger South. The victims are believed to be employees of the Chunky Hunky Baltimore Inn, which occupied the bottom floor of the building. Their identities were not immediately available. Deputy Fire Chief Paul Curlis said a piece of cooking equipment exploded and started a fire that quickly consumed the building. It appears that the deep-fat fryer exploded and ignited the clothing of one of the women, Curlis said. The fire went up so fast they were unable to get out. It was not immediately known whether there were any patrons in the restaurant at the time of the explosion. A man who was outside the building when firefighters arrived was taken to Middletown Regional Hospital for treatment, authorities said. A nursing supervisor said he was in fair condition. All of the 20 firefighters on duty in the southwestern Ohio city and a number of off-duty personnel were called in to battle the blaze, said South. An apartment occupied the second floor of the building, said police officer Mike Combs. He said he was not sure whether anyone was living in the apartment. Firefighters efforts in battling the blaze were complicated by thick smoke which was pouring from the building when they arrived, South said. Theyre using an awful lot of air cylinders, to supply oxygen for firefighters inside the building, South said. Middletown is a city of about 45,000 north of Cincinnati.)
