Some people just layer stupid on top of stupid… Last week, some Boy Scout leaders destroyed an ancient rock formation in Utah’s Goblin Valley State Park. The men wiggled a huge boulder until it tumbled off its natural pedestal. They claimed they saved someone’s life because the boulder might have fallen off in a stiff wind. It had somehow managed to stay there for millions of years, though, until they came along. That was stupid enough, but they also had someone videotape their destruction and post it on the Internet. It went viral. Now, they’ve been booted out of the Boy Scouts and could face charges. But wait: there’s one more layer of stupid. One of the men had just filed a lawsuit, claiming he’d suffered debilitating back injuries in a car crash. Guess who else saw the video? That’s right: the driver he was suing. He’s now arguing that someone who’s severely disabled by a bad back probably wouldn’t climb up on a rock formation and push a boulder off its base. The moral of the story: leave the boulders in national parks alone. Unless you want them to fall on you.
