Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines dont have that problem. Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985 Our American Hero Lance Corporal Walter OHaire USMC Hometown: Rockland, MA Walter K. OHaire was born in Lynn, Mass. When Walter was ten, the O’Haires moved to Rockland. Early on, the move did not go well for Walter. He said, “Rockland was the boondocks”, and before he made some friends, he thought the residents of Rockland were a bunch of hicks. His nickname “Gator” started out as “Wallygator”, after the television character who couldnt be confined. Walter had always been like that himself – when he didnt want to stay put, he didnt. He would at times climb out a back window, so he could be on his own. “Wallygator” was soon shortened to “Gator”, and the rest is history, as they say. Walter “Gator” O’Haire completed his high school requirements at South Shore Regional VoTech. After holding a series of part-time jobs, he decided to enlist in the Marines, which he did on December 28, 2005 – an unusual way to celebrate the Christmas Season. He took basic training at Parris Island, went on to Advanced Infantry School, and completed his training at Lejeune as a HMMWV driver, a.k.a. the “Hummer”. Late in 2005, Gator O’Haire became increasingly impatient to go to Iraq. He had been in the Marines for almost a year, and he wanted to see some action. He arrived in al-Anbar Province with the 6th Marine Division on April 3, 2007. Lance Cpl. O’Haire began going on patrols immediately. Wednesday, May 9, 2007 was his final patrol. Thirty-six days after arriving in Iraq, Walter “Gator” O’Haire sustained a fatal head wound from an insurgent’s bullet. Lance Cpl. Walter K. OHaire, 20, died May 9, 2007 from wounds suffered while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. OHaire was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
