Some photos taken at the Schellsburg Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday, May 25. The church was built in 1806 and is completely original. I displayed a number of GAR and Civil War artifacts from my collection inside this historic structure. We put up flags around the balcony from different US time periods. I also put a CW camp display right outside the door, including a stand of rifles, tents and other gear. We pay homage to the 74 CW Veterans buried in this historic cemetery, Mostly from the 55th PVI and 138th PVI. Interestingly enough there is one rebel buried there, who escaped from a train on his way to Elmira Prison. A Quaker family took him in, and he stayed, lived a long life after the war. My speech touched on the history of Schellsburg which goes back to the French and Indian War, I spoke on Company H of the 55th PVI, the Schellsburg Rifles, and the hardships and dangers of living on the Mason Dixon Line in time of war, plus the origins of Decoration Day. It was great to reconnect with many friends I have not seen in many years. I am pictured here with Bill Mock, a brother from Gettysburg Camp 112, who is in the Ft Bedford Honor Guard, and a good friend. Thanks to John Hicks and George Kohan for stopping by and so hello. It was an amazing experience and I thank the Old Log Church Historical Society, Schellsburg, PA and the Schellsburg VFW for inviting me to speak and display my collection.
