Some pics from our ride today, just a little over 6 weeks from bringing Velma home. She is shaping up to be a pretty nice little horse under saddle. Shes certainly still a greenie beenie, but she shows lots of good changes and progress every ride. Shes quite sensitive to pressure and is a very light ride. I consider myself to be a pretty light rider, but shes showing me that I can be WAY lighter than Im used to…kinda fun actually. The biggest issue that were working through is her grumpiness when I ask her to move up into a canter. It gets better with every ride, but she will still make a grumpy face when I put my leg on (lightly at first, of course!) to ask her to canter. So weve been doing lots of get up and go transitions where I ask her to hustle up into the canter from a walk or halt. Shes figuring out that theres a pretty nice release of pressure when she moves out instead of being grumpy, so seems like her attitude about going forward is getting better every ride. Weve gone out on a few mini trail rides around the property and shes done great with that, she really likes to go out!
