Some recommendations- two movies and a book. 1. Crazy, Stupid Love- a movie from a couple years ago starring Steve Carell, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Excellent romantic comedy with a lot more depth and better character development than typical in these flicks. Cheri and I really enjoyed it. I never thought anything either way of Ryan Gosling, but he was great in this movie. Steve Carell, of course, is hilarious as usual. 2. Captain Phillips- Tom Hanks stars as Capt. Richard Phillips, the captain of a cargo ship, the Maersk Alabama, which was seized by Somali pirates in 2009. Extremely tense, riveting. You wont want to get up to go to the bathroom, so go before you put it on. I actually found myself feeling sorry for the pirate leader, Skinny; once the Navy Seals got involved, he and his three comrades were done for. Check it out. Tom Hanks proves once again why hes one of the best actors of our time. 3. Things That Matter- the best selling book by Charles Krauthammer. A collection of columns he wrote over a thirty year period, on a wide range of subjects, from baseball to chess to politics to theoretical mathematics. Engrossing, funny, witty, and a revelation if you only know him from television commentary. A brilliant thinker, someone I dont always agree with, but someone whose arguments are always logical and well though out. Hes changed my mind on a few things. he first entry, about his older brother who died, is worth the price of the book alone.
