Some students are misunderstanding the fallacy homework. You just need to list the type of fallacy that you saw and then briefly describe it. Find five fallacies like that. They can be very short..or they can be medium or long. Its your choice. You can get full points (50 pts) for any length. I just want to see if you can identify some fallacies around accurately. The fallacies can be from friends, family, many are in politics, sometimes they happen in science, religion, education, etc. Look at the book pg. 81-89 for many examples. Most fallacies are in 4 categories: **DENY EVIDENCE: They reject all evidence against their idea even if its good. **DEMEAN EVIDENCE: They make evidence they dont like seem weak. **DISTORT EVIDENCE: They misrepresent ideas they dont like. **DISTRACT FROM EVIDENCE: They find some way to ignore evidence or change the topic to make people forget about evidence. Here are a couple short and medium length examples. ------------------------------------------ EXAMPLE #1: CHERRY PICKING: ------------------------------------------ North Korea says that Americans are homeless and just eat snow in this video. BEN: Is that fair?I was late a couple times. But, Ive been on times many times too. Thats quite a hasty generalization. Here are 2 examples that I saw just today: ------------------------------------------ EXAMPLE #3: DOUBLE STANDARD ------------------------------------------ Paul: Torture is against the law. But, president Bush tortured some people from Afghanistan because he thought they might be terrorists. I think he should be put in prison. Bill: The republicans didnt break the law. Democrats are just doing propaganda. Bryan: Well, sadly both republicans and democrats have done some torture in some cases. Both Clinton and Obama have allowed some torture of people they captured and so did Bush and others. Paul has a double standard there. Many other nations have done this too. Torturing someone who has done no wrong is a crime and immoral itself. 2) Torture and injustice just cause more anger and more people to want to do terrorism. 3) The CIAs brutal interrogations of terrorism suspects from 2002 to 2008 led to false confessions and fabricated information, produced no useful intelligence about imminent terrorist attacks and were so badly run that the CIA lost track of captives, according to a long-delayed Senate report released Tuesday. latimes/nation/la-fg-torture-report-20141210-story.html#page=1 ------------------------------------------ EXAMPLE #4: A PRIORI FALLACY ------------------------------------------ Bryan Creation says we should see many types of life (especially sealife) in the lowest earth layers. Scientists have found around 50-100 phyla in the Cambrian explosion. There are only ~30 some alive today. This is very strong evidence for creation science and against Darwinism. Jim Still no evidence. Im again not surprised since there is no scientific evidence confirming creation science.. Bryan I just gave you evidence. It is an a priori fallacy to deny evidence just because you dont like it. There IS evidence for BOTH Darwinism and Creation science. The important question is which has the best evidence. Many objective scientists think that the best evidence (such as the Cambrian Explosion) supports creation science.
