Some thoughts.... Appropriation artists, and everyone really, must understand that just because a photograph is in front of them, its not theirs to use as they so choose. Permission, however, is the best way to get to use of a photo though, so just ask first. We have to remember that the time spent between photographer and subject is a collaboration and has agreed upon usage. Photographers cant even use their OWN images in just any way...without permisssion. The sanctity of the shoot and the subjects faith in the photographer is compromised when the images are incorrectly, or alternatively, used... and thusly it weakens the photographers chance of working with that subject (among others) ever again. I accept the free-market attitude of the internet and art-world-at-large, but some thoughtfulness before action is required. Of course, money is usually the solution.. so if you really, REALLY, need THAT image for your art- throw some some money at the other artist... the one who made it first. theartnewspaper/articles/Prince-versus-Cariou-copyright-case-settled/32076
