Some will remember the picture that I posted several weeks ago of an Oklahoma Highway Patrol car parked on the sidewalk directly across the street from the main entrance of the Tulsa County Courthouse. Today, I received the following e-mail in reply to the complaint that I made: Mr. Jay Ramey, This is email is in reference to your complaint sent to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Chief Rick Adams office via the internet complaint format. Your complaint was of an OHP unit parked upon the sidewalk of what appeared to have been on the east side of Denver Ave. between 6th Street and 3rd Street just east of the Tulsa County Courthouse. A picture was taken of a black Chevrolet Tahoe with an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Map and State Trooper decal upon it. It is clearly shown upon the sidewalk, adjacent to the closed YMCA building. This is clearly a violation of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol department Operations Manual policy on the operation of Patrol vehicles. Every Trooper, regardless of rank, is not only required, but mandated to operate (which includes parking) their patrol units in such a manner that sets the example of safety, courtesy and patience to other motorist and to the public in general. The manner in which we operate our Patrol vehicles is the most conspicuous aspects of our actions to the public including yourself and all those who witnessed this infraction while at the courthouse. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable. During the course of my investigation into the matter, I discovered the Trooper who committed this policy infraction. I assure you this matter was addressed and handle appropriately within the guidelines of our disciplinary process. I do not anticipate this type of behavior to occur in the future with this member, nor any other. Any and all members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are not above the laws of our great State and the city of Tulsa. We are expected as all citizens are to park our vehicles in a designated parking spot, even at our inconvenience I deeply regret this situation to have happened. I hope your experience with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol in the future is a more positive one. Should you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me at the Troop B Tulsa headquarters by phone (918-XXX-XXX) or by email. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. LT.
